How did this gentle old man inspire such SHOCKING films?

This was originally going to be one of my extremely long videos, probably 2 hours or so in length, but I decided I needed to tone it down a bit. No idea if this video will find an audience, if it does, I’d love to dig into this topic further. Ideally, I’d love to do a video about the true crime and serial killer movies, and then I’d love to do one on the se* comedies/movies (yes, I’ve had to censor a few things here, trying not to get the video de-monetized and thus receiving no views).

One thing I think I would have liked to include in the section about Run Run Shaw was his consistency in wanting to give his viewers whatever they wanted. As Godfrey Ho says in the video, “this was the selling point of the movies, this is what the audiences wanted.” when referring to the cinematic violence. There’s a great story in a book called Ask For the Moon by Meredith Lewis (I found it after writing the script/recording the audio for this video) where it describes how the Shaw Bros. put on a play in their earliest days and when one of the leads came on the stage, the physical stage broke underneath him and he fell below. The audience laughed so much, thinking it was part of the show, that the next night the Shaws made sure that the actor fell through the floor again. His idea was to give the viewer what they wanted, and if that meant buckets of blood… so be it.

Also, one little correction (sort of)… When I say in the video “recertified for video” in reference to Triads: The Inside Story, I mean it probably had a cinematic (meaning shown in theaters) recertification BEFORE it hit video. The video market uses a different rating system than Cat 1, 2a, 2b, and 3. While what I said wasn’t inherently wrong, I could have worded it better and I only thought about it upon 4th rewatch!

A brief synpopsis:
This video focuses on what the Category III rating actually is, the history and landscape before it, and it also takes a look at the first local Hong Kong film to receive the rating, the first Western/foreign film, and the first from mainland China. Hope you all enjoy it!

These Kung Fu stars HATED each other, here’s why!

A new video essay from Weird Cinema!

The Category III video, or set of videos as it may turn out to be, is still in the works, but I felt like the audience wanted me to return to the world of martial arts on celluloid – and the poll I did on the community page proved it – so here we are!

David Chiang and Ti Lung, two of the biggest stars in the history of Shaw Brothers studio… I personally did not even know that their split was anything other than amicable, so digging into this story was a real eye opener for me. The stars of The Blood Brothers, The Deadly Duo, and so many other films that I didn’t even want to speculate on that number for this video. Seriously, way too many sources with different numbers!

This video marks something a little different for me. Focusing more on a story this time rather than breaking down every single film I can find, so, hopefully you guys like it!

Some other stuff:

Other sources used that I didn’t mention in the video include These Fists Break Bricks by Grady Hendrix, in fact I think that “why not Chinese Iron Fist” line that Wang Yu is supposed to have said might have come from that book. It’s a fantastic read, never the less.

I read a rumor on BilliBilli that not only was Ti Lung supportive of Chang Cheh in his final days, but he supposedly helped him during this period when no one else did? This was just one comment on a video that I couldn’t confirm, but I don’t want people to watch this video and think that Ti Lung is a bad person for any of this. Despite everything I dug up, we still really don’t know what happened with the nuts and bolts of this situation – but I feel I did my best! Hope you all enjoy it!

A Horror film MASTERPIECE, hiding in plain sight

Back again! Although we did promise to get into the wild world of Category III cinema, I felt inspired after re-watching The Exorcist III for the millionth time. It truly is one of my all-time favorite films and every time I sit down to re-watch it, I learn so much more about the lived-in world that this movie takes place in. It’s scary, terrifying, and also incredibly well produced. A great film that deserves so many more accolades than it receives. Check it out! Yet another video essay for you all to fall asleep to! While this isn’t the “weirdest movie” ever covered on this channel, I still consider it a wonderful hidden gem with a fascinating story surrounding it

And with this out of the way, I go back to work on the Category III project which I hope I can keep confined to being just one video.

A couple of little mistakes/things I wish I could have got into with the video:

At one point I say ” San Diego” when referring to the Zodiac killer crimes, I meant to say San Francisco. This was a mistake made by a poor Southern boy who has never been to the West Coast.

Although not really a mistake, I could have talked more about the history of the film being made. I’ve read various accounts of William Peter Blatty’s writing of the original script. I’ve read that he started working on a script for a sequel before The Heretic was made, and I’ve also read that both he and William Friedkin were offered to come back for Exorcist 2 and they both ultimately refused. I feel like I watched several interviews with Blatty where he kind of gave conflicting reports on all this.

Every Italian Cannibal Movie Reviewed: Video Essay On Cinema’s Darkest Horror Genre | Weird Cinema

Welcome to a comprehensive video essay exploring the notorious Italian Cannibal film genre, known for its controversial and boundary-pushing content. Please visit my website to get more information: https://www.weird-cinema.com/

Join us as we explore every movie from this dark corner of cinema, including iconic films like “Cannibal Holocaust” and “Cannibal Ferox.” These films are not just about gore; they offer a unique window into the extremes of human storytelling and cultural shock value.

Although not the fastest upload in internet history, for a project of this size… I am impressed with the turnaround for this video. While finishing the Bruceploitation video, I was halfway through the script for this project – and although I thought it would be quicker and shorter (I just thought it would be a breezy 45-minute video with a little history), I am VERY proud of this video.

Exploring the dark world of Italian Cannibal Films, we tackle the entire main cycle in this video and attempt to cover every single film within the subgenre. These are horror movies unlike anything else out there. They are some of the darkest content in the film world, but they are much more than gore films.

Obscure Millennial Japanese Cinema | Video Essay

Welcome back to Weird Cinema!

In this video, we dive into a genre that may not even be a genre, something I like to call Millennial Asian Cinema. These are films released throughout Asia that fall under the blanket of genre cinema and were made during the 90s up until the late 2000s era. In this video we will explore five captivating, and little seen, Japanese films that are, if you ask me, an absolute must-watch.

From thought-provoking ruminations on life, to hyperkinetic storms of style, this genre showcases the essence of offbeat Asian filmmaking. From the critically acclaimed “Gonin” which tackles the acceptance of life ending and the issues pertaining to men hoping for a fair chance in an unfair world, to the visually stunning “Sharkskin Man and Peach Hip Girl” that takes you on a surreal journey into a manga style adventure fighting against the yakuza and insane family members, this list covers a diverse range of storytelling approaches. “City of Lost Souls” is a lesser talked about Takashi Miike film that delivers a a unique blend of style, comedy, and even romance, leaving you puzzled but super entertained. Meanwhile, “Electric Dragon 80,000 V.” offers a lowfi, low budget, cyberpunk enthusiasts view of a society ruled by industrial styled punk rock superheroes. Lastly, “Onibi: The Fire Within” is Roluro Mochizuki’s wonderful yakuza tale of love, vio lence, and men from another era misplaced into a modern world that does understand or accept them. Throughout this video, we’ll explore the themes, cinematography, and standout performances that make these films unforgettable. As we delve deeper into each movie, you’ll gain a newfound appreciation for the rich and vibrant world of Millennial Asian Cinema. If you’re passionate about Japanese films or eager to discover hidden gems in world cinema, this video is perfect for you. Expand your horizons and join us on this cinematic adventure through Millennial Asian Cinema.

This video is just a quick and easier addition to the channel as I hack away at the next hour long video. If you’d like to hear what that next video is, watch this video all the way to its end!

Bruceploitation & The Bruce Lee Clones – A Video Essay

After the tragic death of Bruce Lee, the world went into mourning and the hustlers of the world got a game plan: to clone Bruce Lee! Well, not REALLY clone him, just find some actors who look like him and start making movies! Today we look at this wild genre known as Bruceploitation.

Guess who is back! This is one I’ve been off/on working on for the better part of three years. The script has been done for almost that entire time, but I had to go back and adjust things along the way. The majority of the work has been completed over the past three months. I went from 15 minutes completed to the full 70 minutes we have here. Between last posting and now, my personal life has been wild – but currently I feel like jumping into this with full commitment. We will see how that goes. This is a one man operation, and I created more motion effects for this project than anything else that I’ve ever done. Probably referenced more movies than ever before either!

Music:
The Big Boss-esque theme by – Ajeng C (https://www.fiverr.com/s/pgG86p)
Funky song used during Bruceploitation montage – taken from here: https://youtu.be/khjhIibaCZI?si=kCwi9LdqSjad9CXB (I still don’t know the name of this song)
Rest of the music – Made by Me in Magix Music Maker

Special Thanks:
Lee Holmes – looking over the script, pointing out Fist of Unicorn to me, correcting some inaccuracies I had… lord knows there’s probably more.
Somu M. – Created the Thumbnail for the Video (https://www.fiverr.com/s/o0KVqg).
Michael & Matthew of the Clones Cast – Gathered a lot of information from The Clones Cast for this video. https://screenmayhem.com/the-clones-cast/ listen back on their archive to hear more great information!

Further notes: there are a lot of notable films not present in this video. Hard to believe I didn’t include Dragon Lee vs. The Five Brothers! There are many, many others. If I missed any greats, share them in the comments so we can all join in and talk about them!

A lot of the information here has been gathered from various sites, interviews, podcasts, etc. Quite honestly, I hope it is all accurate and up to date, but due to the prolonged period of working on this, and a terribly inefficient way of saving my sources (doh!) its hard for me to produce where I picked up every factoid. https://www.clonesofbrucelee.info/ was a great source of information during the creation of this video. I also used https://www.hkmdb.com/ and http://www.hkcinemagic.com/ like my life depended on it!

Please like, comment, and subscribe! If all goes well, I intend to pick up a new microphone (I know, I need it) and will start work on the next project immediately!

Incredible Feats: The World of Hong Kong Stuntmen

This video, as opposed to most of my projects, was a rather quick edit. I’ve had most of it written for a while, but the whole point was just to make a quick compilation of eye-catching scenes. This video required a whole lot less research than most of the big Weird Cinema projects, but the whole point was to make something cool and fun without putting a year into the work. Forgive me if there are a couple of incorrect facts or lines throughout, as I didn’t get to do as much vigorous fact checking with this project. However, if there are many mistakes throughout I would likely remove the video and re-edit – as that’s just the sort of weird fellow I am! Enjoy and post any clips or references in the comments about any other amazing stunt sequences!

I’m actually pretty proud that this video isn’t just Jackie Chan fights or Jackie Chan stunts, but some had to sneak in there of course! I am fairly proud of this video and feel the world of HK Stunts and action movies would be proud of me!

Some corrections (since I don’t want to re-upload the entire video):
– She Shoots Straight was actually directed by Corey Yuen. Unsure why I referenced Sammo Hung as the director. He does direct, but Corey Yuen was the credited director.
– Tsui Siu-Ming, director of Mirage, was actually co-director of The Buddhist Fist. I don’t want to short Yuen Woo-Ping for his proper credit as the director. Sorry about that!

Like I said, this was a video that was made quickly with the intention of showing off some very cool scenes from movies that I enjoy.

Prepare to be Shocked: Exploring the World of Pinky Violence

After years away, Weird Cinema returns with an episode that required hundreds of hours of research, writing, editing, and general brain power. Peeling back the curtain, this is mostly a one man operation. So, after the last episode of the show was completed, I knew I wanted to tackle the world of pinky violence. That means Reiko Ike, Miki Sugimoto, Toei, and a LOT of preparation!

Just going by the information available on the internet here in the West, this episode would have been a lot shorter. However, the Wikipedia entries for this genre leave a lot to be desired. So, after writing a couple thousand words on the genre, I started getting my information fact checked by my buddy Mikko who speaks and reads Japanese, loves the genre, and spends his time on this lovely island nation. I soon found that what we know of and think of as the pinky violence genre is a pretty small portion of the story. With that, it was back to the drawing board.

Around the beginning of the year, most of the script was written. Then the editing process began, with numerous sections being rewritten over and over again. Finally, here we are. I’m sure there are some inaccuracies here and there, but none of it intentional. Also, obviously, I am not a Japanese speaker – so my pronunciation is probably way off, but it is what it is.

“Yrev very good to see you again, old friend.” Twin Peaks

Like every other geek on the planet, I’m currently obsessing once again over Lynch’s latest creation. Just wanted to confirm this little Easter egg for myself. Not a new Weird Cinema update, obviously!

Unveiling the Enigmatic Works of Frederic C. Hobbs

WARNING: THERE ARE SPOILERS AND A DETAILED PLOT SUMMARY FOR GODMONSTER OF INDIAN FLATS IN THIS VIDEO!

With school out of the way and laziness being my only true obstacle, here is the long awaited (as if anyone is waiting) episode 2 in the Weird Cinema series. As with the first episode, this took a great deal of time, energy, and research. The majority of knowledge on the subject of Frederic Hobbs comes from Nightmare USA which is mentioned in the video. It’s a great book and the detailed article about Hobbs is phenomenal and has been my greatest insight into this filmmaker’s vision. Definitely grab a copy if you can: https://www.amazon.com/NIGHTMARE-USA-Untold-Exploitation-Independents/dp/1903254469/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485227781&sr=8-1

Although this episode has a much smaller focus than the previous, due to its reliance on video clips from these specific movies – it tends to take up more time. Hopefully there are others who are just as blown away by these films as I am and hopefully this information will give more of an insight into the work of this wild filmmaker.
